| Entry Field Style Sheet |
|
Before there were computer programmers usurping perfectly fine words and forever altering their meanings, a style sheet was widely known as an institution's list of preferred English usage, especially when there is more than one way to write something. Part utilitarian, part philosophical, style sheets are meant to keep order, to address questions before they arise, and to promote an institution's values and public persona by providing uniformity to our complex and evolving language. For instance, we at The Book Shop disallow abbreviations in our database in order to avoid preventable confusion and to foster clarity of meaning, with one exception: state abbreviations. Addresses, by the way, are one of the oldest reasons for the adoption of institutional style sheets. Is it 1234 St Mark St St 123 St Louis, or 1234 Saint Mark Street Suite 123 Saint Louis? And when there are any number of permutations, how can a company quickly, easily and thoroughly conduct a data search for that address in order to avoid costly duplication? How professional does it look for a company to send out a mailing several times to the same address? The answer, of course, is to adopt and stick to the usages itemized by a logical style sheet. Please familiarize yourself with ours.
* * * * * Keywords And Categories * * * * * Keywords are included in each book's listing to aid browsers in finding books that match their interests. The first word or phrase in every list of non-fiction keywords indicates the book's category, or the department in our physical store where the book would most logically be shelved. Similarly, the first word in every list of fiction keywords is fiction, followed by the book's designation as literature (general fiction) or genre. All following keyword descriptors are in alphabetical order to assist searching and reference. The exception to the alphabetical rule comes when the first keyword word or phrase is too broad, too generic, to give browser a sense of the book's true focus as in so many books about History, Science or Religion, for example: in such cases the first several keywords may appear as History Medieval Europe Annals Antiquity .... or Science Biology Crustaceans Atlantic Ocean Anatomy Biochemistry .... or Religion Theology Buddhism Ceremony Customs .... The first word or phrase, or category, in other words, may be broken down to its more specific discipline before the remaining contextual keywords are appended.
