GOOD - HC - No DJ - Leatherbound - Antiquarian - Two Extra Sentences
A manual of devotion generally credited to the pen of Thomas A Kempis in 1418, in total consisting of four books (Book I - Admonitiones Ad Vitam Spiritualem Utiles - Thoughts Helpful In The Life Of The Soul, Book II - Admonitiones Ad Interna Trahentes - The Interior Life, Book III - De Interna Consolatine - Internal Consolation, and Book IV - De Devota Exhortatione Ad Sacram Corporis Christi Communionem - An Invitation To Holy Communion), Corneille's influential poetical paraphrasing into French verse was begun in 1651 and completed in 1656. The remarkably readable small leatherbound volume we're offering is Volume One (only) of a two-volume set, comprising Books I and II, published in 1660 in the Netherlands. Collating as complete, all leaves and printed flourishes present as published, and featuring Latin and the French translation on facing pages, the completely unmarked textblock of this quite good-looking rarely found 1660 hardcover 263-page first edition thus issued is entirely clean, tight, square and carries no highlighting, underlining or marginalia, and shows only moderate age-toning, minor fore-edge wrinkling of a couple leaves which are partially separated at the spine. Highlighted by four raised bands and five backstrip compartments ruled in gilt, as are the boards, the at-one-time tree-calf leather coverboards carry no other printing or designwork and show heavy finish rubbing, inch-long rub-through to the board edges at the lower tips, a pea-sized chip to the upper backstrip, and separation of the lower inch of the front joint. No dustjacket accompanies this exceptional volume.
GOOD - HC - No DJ - Clothbound - Decent Interior
Originally published jointly in 1827 by Cadell & Company (Edinburgh) and Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green (London), and printed by Ballantyne and Company in double column throughout, collating as complete, frontispiece and all contents present as published, the unmarked untrimmed textblock of this surprisingly readable well-respected 1828 hardcover 858-page first edition thus issued is clean, tight, square, carries no highlighting, underlining or marginalia, and shows fairly heavy age-toning, spotty foxing throughout especially to the endpapers, and sign of quite careful perhaps recent adhesive amelioration to the front hinge. The paper title label to the backstrip present, readable, darkened and edge-chipped, the light green paper-covered backstrip and boards are present but worn, showing noticeable finish rubbing, marked corner blunting, prominent finish loss to most edges, shallow chipping to the backstrip extremities, partial separation along the upper and lower joints, and a hint of careful non-invasive adhesive care to the front and rear joints. No dustjacket accompanies this keepsake volume, which may be a perfect candidate for rebinding.
